Get into the festive mood with the help of FIMO

These home‑made coasters are not only pretty, they’re also practical, because they prevent cups leaving unsightly rings on your table. Create your own unique coasters with eye‑catching effects now – they’re quick and easy to make. Your handmade hygge designs from FIMO leather‑effect will create a cosy atmosphere and are real one‑off pieces.

Material Overview

Step One

Roll out a block of FIMO leather‑effect in dove grey using the acrylic roller. Then pass it through the clay machine on setting 1 to turn it into a sheet. Now pass the sheet through on increasingly thinner settings until you reach setting 4. Mix 8 portions of FIMO leather-effect in dove grey with one portion of FIMO leather-effect in black to create a lovely anthracite colour. Turn this into a sheet, too, using the clay machine on setting 4.

Step Two

Now lay the sheets on some baking paper and take some leaf metal. Tear it into small pieces and apply it unevenly to the FIMO leather‑effect sheets.

Step Three

Roll gently over the sheets with the acrylic roller one more time so that the leaf metal binds well with the FIMO.

TIP
The leather effect stands out even better if you move the FIMO sheet gently by hand after rolling it out, pulling it apart a bit.

Step Four

Now take a round cutter with a diameter of approx. 10 cm and cut out as many circles as possible. Simply knead any excess clay together again, roll out and repeat the above steps as necessary. Then harden all the circles for 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 130 °C / 266° F on upper and lower heat.

TIP
Work in progress and left-over material should be protected against sun and heat and can be stored in a screw-top jar or in cling film to protect it from dust and dirt.

Step Five

Once your coasters have hardened, leave them to cool. Finally, apply some varnish for leaf metal to give your artwork extra protection and make the leaf metal look even better. Apply a thin layer of varnish with a fine brush and leave the coasters to dry completely.
