    Default Rather dull looking

Hi all you twinklers, I’ve never used a household silver cleaner. I’ve always used a soft brass brush and soap to clean all my plain silver jewellery that I wear out. However, I have an amber set chain that has badly tarnished. Any suggestions for cleaning without damaging all the amber cabochons … thanks … Nick

You can get a Goddards cream polish in a tub with a sponge which should work. You can gently polish amber with rouge or even toothpaste so it should be gentle enough. If you can dip the chain while holding the amber out, you could silver dip it and just use a silver cloth for the setting

Thanks for the suggestions Caroline. I was worried about harsh chemicals damaging amber. But if a silver cloth is suitable, I’ll keep an eye out for some next time I’m shopping.
As my toothpaste has gritty bits in it and maybe a bit course i’ll pick up some kids toothpaste at the same time … Appreciate that … N

That was just example to show what amber would survive in polishing. You’re right it won’t like chemicals but for chains I do prefer a quick dip to get into the nooks and crannies if you can hold the stones out of it then washing up liquid and rinse well. The cloth will only clean the outer surface of the chain

Thanks Caroline, I’ll definitely try the softly softly approach with toothpaste first, I think I even have a cheap ultrasonic toothbrush in the workshop somewhere … cheers … Nick

That works well Caroline, ended up using a big squirt of toothpaste on a plastic nail brush. All came up nice even the Amber looks brighter … N

Whatever works but the toothpaste was only for the amber as an example if you don’t have rouge. It will be abrasive for silver and will probably have given it a whiter than white matt finish!

I like the fact that the toothpaste was water soluble and was a quick cleanup whereas I get into a right mess with rouge. For a quick spruce up before going out the toothpaste technique was perfect … cheers … Nick
