Shop NowBeads or pearls on silk threads may require occasional restringing since silk can wear out over time. The need for this maintenance depends on how often they are worn and how well they are cared for. As a general rule, it's a good idea to consider restringing silk-threaded items every year or two. Here's a handy tip: if the silk between your beads still looks bright white and clean, they probably won’t need restringing yet. However, if you notice any discolouration or dirt buildup, it's a friendly reminder that it's time to give them a little TLC and restring them.
If you happen to notice some rough edges around the bead holes, no worries! You can easily smooth and tidy them up by using a bead reamer equipped with a 45-degree diamond tip. It's a handy little tool to have in your kit for those finishing touches.
For that extra touch of care and a tidy finish to your necklace or bracelet, try using some gimp wire to protect the thread as it passes through the clasp. It's a simple trick that not only prevents wear but also adds a lovely touch of craftsmanship to your piece.
We would recommend Flex-rite wire for working with heavy beads. This wire is a blend of nylon and stainless steel, offering both strength and flexibility. Plus, it comes in a range of sizes and fun colours to suit your project.
Gimp wire is a super-fine coiled wire that wraps around your thread, shielding it from wear and tear against fastenings. This handy wire can accommodate threads up to 0.7mm in diameter, and it's not just friendly to your jewellery but also nickel-safe and compliant with EC Nickel regulations. Once you've threaded your beads, add a crimp, then slide a short piece of gimp wire onto the thread. Next, pass it through the clasp's loop, loop it back through the crimp, and give it a firm squeeze with your pliers. It's like giving your jewellery a little hug to keep it safe and sound!
Pearls are often drilled with very small holes. So, when it comes to threading them, consider using a fine thread like natural silk or the extra-fine Flex-rite wire for that added strength. Flex-rite wire is strong, flexible, and, unlike silk, won't require restringing over time. However, if you're thinking of knotting between each bead, keep in mind that Flex-rite wire might not be the right choice, as the strand won't lie flat.
