CAD for 3D Printing

If you’re new to working with CAD you’ll need software to allow you to design your pieces. We’ve broken these down to jewellery specific software and more general CAD software which can also be used to design your pieces. We’ve also given some pros and cons of each of the software to help you pick what’s best for you. Lab Grown Diamonds

Rhino 3D

On it's own Rhino3D is a 3D printing software used in multiple industries for 3D design. It can be customised with paid add ons, which allows you to create jewellery specific items such as rings. You can find out more on their website for distributors and prices. We use Rhino3D with our in house designers and to prepare your file for prints.

Pros

  • Large Community
  • Lots of online Resources
  • Popular in the industry including for CNC and 3D printing
  • Reasonable cost, no subscription fees

Cons

  • Not really beginner friendly/li>
  • No jewellery specific tools/li>
  • Limited history to go back and alter designs

General CAD

The software below is used widely used for other 3D Printing types but can be used and adapted to fit jewellery applications and more.


 

Blender

Blender is a free and open source application that enables 3D modelling alongside other features such as animation and 2D design. There are plenty of resources available online as well as plugins for jewellery design. Visit their website for the further details.

  • Multiple Use software
  • Strong 3D modelling capability

Cons

  • Steep learning curve
  • Not technically designed for CAD
  • Needs plugins for rendering metal

Jewellery Software

These software have features to allow you to model your pieces, and often have features such as stone setting designs, or fixed shapes to you translate your design accurately for 3D Printing.
 

3Design

Intuitively built for jewellers with multiple modules and customisation options to allow both organic design and sculpting that also features costing options within its interface. There are many license options just contact your local representative to find out more.

  • MAC & PC compatible
  • It is a Parametric software, so there is no need to start a design from scratch each time
  • Easy to learn
  • Lots of jewellery specific tools
  • Get immediate visualisation while designing your pieces
  • Different level of licences, allowing you to upgrade at any time
  • New users get free and unlimited access to the Training Lounge for 12 months

Cons

  • Higher initial cost- finance options available through local representative
  • Small but growing online community

MatrixGold

MatrixGold is often a software of choice of jewellers across the world and has a strong community of designers across the world. They have ample resources to allow you to get started or advance your skills as a designer. To find out more visit the UK distributor’s website.

  • Advanced rendering that is easy and intuitive
  • Simple interface
  • Large online community and resources
  • Trusted by the industry

Cons

  • Expensive outlay for features available in other software packages
  • Not suited for beginners
  • Knowledge of Rhino 3D may be needed
